Mindfulness Therapy At Our Dundee Centre

Mindfulness therapy is currently very popular and can be applied to all sorts of areas including stress, anxiety, mood-related issues and much more. There are a number of therapies that incorporate the mindfulness approach including Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Mindfulness stems from ancient practices and involves learning to focus the mind on the immediate present. The reason this can be so helpful is that our minds tend to wander off and invent scenarios that affect our mood. For example, we may start thinking about past failures when we are preparing to do something new. This may result in negative thoughts, such as “I can’t do this” or “I failed last time – I’m not good at things like this”. Although these are just thoughts, not reality, our moods are affected by them. Negative thoughts, such as these, can bring about feelings of anger, sadness, guilt, anxiety or regret.

Practising mindfulness can help us learn to recognise the wanderings of our minds as just thoughts and allow them to come and go without placing too much emphasis on them.

In time, and with a lot of practice, mindfulness can be extremely powerful in helping people to feel more relaxed as they go about their daily lives.
